| Novice Workshops |
| The Minnesota Bonsai Society offers a variety of bonsai workshops - most are held in both spring and fall. If you're new to bonsai, Novice (Beginners) Workshops are a great way to get started. You will receive your own pre-bonsai tree, a suitable pot with soil, and an intensive one-day workshop designed to give you the basic skills needed to create and care for your own bonsai. Enrollment is filled on a first-come basis, so please register early. Plant Material for 2010 Novice Workshops SATURDAY WORKSHOPS will use outdoor bonsai material - Japanese Garden Junipers. An outdoor bonsai will need protection in winter. SUNDAY WORKSHOPS will use indoor bonsai material - "Golden Gate" Ficus. Indoor bonsai should be kept indoors, above freezing, in winter. WHEN June 12 (Juniper) OR June 13 (Ficus) September 18 (Juniper) OR September 19 (Ficus) COST $60 includes morning instruction and afternoon hands-on styling, and includes all materials, tree, pot, soil, wire and the use of club tools. WHERE The Education Bldg. at McNeely Conservatory in Como Park, St. Paul where you may also view the Conservatory's outstanding collection of bonsai. WHAT A Novice Workshop day runs from 10 AM to 4 PM which includes a morning lecture session, and a hands-on styling session in the afternoon with a lunch break in between. In the lecture session you'll learn about the history of bonsai, the aesthetic principles involved, and the tools and techniques needed to produce quality bonsai. We'll also cover region-specific considerations, where to find local suppliers, and information that's hard to find in bonsai books.
