| For the September 6th general meeting, visiting bonsai professional Marty Schmalenberg will present a program on the literati, or bunjin, style of bonsai. I can't recall ever hearing this subject discussed at a meeting, and since literati is probably my favorite style, I'm certainly looking forward to getting Marty's take on it. Marty's experiences with bonsai started in 1972 studying on his own. Love of bonsai brought him to a bonsai convention in NYC in 1979 where he met Bill Valavanis, who became a major influence on his bonsai pursuits. Over the years Marty has studied in Japan with Hiroyoshi Yamaji and Mikio Oshima and with many others in the United States. With an artist's eye, he has developed a wonderful style of his own firmly based on the art of Japanese masters. Marty has become a teacher of note. He has headlined in conventions all over the US with masters like Kimura in Detroit, and teaches at many bonsai clubs as well as his Stillwater Studio that he started in 2001. There he offers instruction and educational events as well as opportunities to work with world-class artists such as Boon Manakitivipart, Nick Lenz and Salvatore Liporace. Program chairman Glenda Jungquist has asked for people to bring along an example of a bunjin tree from home, and Marty will comment on them after his initial talk. The meeting begins at 7:30 PM, but come earlier to visit the vendors, check out books and videos from the library, buy raffle tickets, and try the coffee 'n cookies counter (leave a tip when you fill up - we'll need more for next month). |
