| SHADY POND Since the yard is 95 percent dappled shade, we had no choice but shade for the pond we built in 1998. It's about 6x8-feet and 2 feet at the deepest center, lined with a sheet of heavy-duty rubber pond liner, the edges held in place by a variety of hand-picked stones. The ones covered in moss are tufa rocks inherited from Randy Clark when he moved to North Carolina. He brought them here from Ohio. |

| The pond has settled itself in, within these 7 years, and has a lot of "scenery" to admire in such a tiny space! The bamboo pipe splashes day and night, a constant attraction to all birds within hearing - and once, an egret who spotted the watery reflection came winging down between the trees for a little goldfish pick-me-up. (next page) Left, a Chinese Wisteria Bonsai spends summer with its feet firmly in the pond, ensuring a good crop of purple flowers next spring. |
