SHADY POND
Since the yard is 95 percent dappled shade, we had no choice but shade for the pond we built in 1998. It's about 6x8-feet and 2 feet at the deepest center, lined with a sheet of heavy-duty rubber pond liner, the edges held in place by a variety of hand-picked
stones. The ones covered in moss are tufa rocks inherited from Randy Clark when he moved to North Carolina. He brought them here from Ohio.
The pond has settled itself in, within these 7 years, and has a lot of "scenery" to admire in such a tiny space! The bamboo pipe splashes day and night, a constant attraction to all birds within hearing - and once, an egret who spotted the watery reflection came winging down between the trees for a little goldfish pick-me-up. Left, a Chinese Wisteria Bonsai spends summer with its feet firmly in the pond, ensuring a good crop of purple flowers next spring.
