Long-time club member Dr. Terry Davis will give a Powerpoint presentation  at our November 2nd general meeting. Terry went to California this summer, armed with a digital camera, and photographed the spectacular conifers of the Sierra-Nevada area, including examples in Yosemite National Park and in the Bristlecone Pines of the White Mountains.

Terry will point out how we can learn from these nature-styled trees when training our bonsai. He said that John Naka's drawings in his book, Bonsai Techniques II, always seemed somewhat stylized -- until Terry saw the real-life examples for himself.  (So THAT'S where John came up with all those wonderful windswept forms, and junipers that were more deadwood than foliage!)  Terry also collected various cones and will bring them along.

While in the Bay Area, he visited with our old friend Dennis Makishima, who came several times in past years to our club to spread the gospel of bonsai. Although he took photos of Dennis's bonsai collection, Terry says he had a bit of trouble with the memory card that stored them -- but may have it fixed in time to show these too.

Tree of the Month
Rather than focusing on a particular tree species, this month we will feature a particular style of tree -- the winter silhouette. As you read the bonsai literature, you will have discovered that this look is becoming more and more popular on the West Coast and in Japan. There are entire shows devoted to the appreciation of this stage of growing. The only way to truly appreciate the years of work that are involved in ramification development is to observe a deciduous tree after the leaves have dropped, thus the name winter silhouette.

If you have a tree that fits this description, please bring it for all to enjoy. If you have a tree that has not yet reached this stage but is displaying beautiful fall coloring, please share it with us and we'll use our imaginations to appreciate the underlying structure.

We will be calling for nominations from the floor at this meeting, for any and all positions on the executive board (election is in December). After this and a few announcements at 7:30, we will settle back to enjoy Terry's presentation. It's always a good idea to come a bit early (say 7:00) to have plenty of time to check our the vendors' offerings, the raffle prizes, our outstanding library of books, magazines and videos, to draw yourself a cup of coffee and to choose a good seat for the program.

Please Don't Forget! Meeting day is also PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION DAY, so mark your calendar now to vote before coming to the meeting.
