MBS Board Meeting - March 27, 2007

The meeting was called to order at 7 PM. Present were: Mary Russell, Ken Ellis, Bob Hampel, Dale Krueger, Larry Oreschnick, Pat Leners, Cheryl Sykora, Tom Durnick and Laura Flath. Absent were: Val Drinane, treasurer, Lynn Aaze, Terry Bishop, Glenda Jungquist and Tim Mathwig.

The Feb. Board meeting minutes were read and approved.

President’s Report: Mary asked again whether anyone wanted to set up a display at the Midwest Token Kai (samurai sword) club show; no takers. She will talk to the organizer and will write up a notice for the May newsletter.

Treasurer’s Report:
Val was absent; she will email latest reports to board members.

1st VP/Programs: Bob said the April meeting will feature cool styling techniques.

2nd VP/Workshops: Larry reported that novice workshop applications are coming in slowly. Master workshops, for Roy Nagatoshi, are filling very slowly. Pat suggested that having Suthin (extra, private) workshops at the same time is probably the main cause. Pat reminded the board that “master” workshops were officially changed to “club” workshops several years ago. The “master” terminology may be scaring newer members away. Board decided to give a club workshop gift certificate to the raffle for the April general meeting.

COMMITTEE REPORTS
Bonsai Basics Class:
Cheryl reported good attendance for the hands-on repotting class in March. She will recruit experienced helpers for the wiring class in April.

Art in Bloom: Ken reported that 11 members would be showing one tree each at the April Art in Bloom show at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Discussed setup and takedown times.

Mother's Day Show: Larry said we will prewire the novice workshop junipers as demos during the show. The display will be in the bonsai room, adjoining hallway, and education room. Dale will make up identification cards for the trees ahead of time. We may show suiseki also. Larry reported that the Conservatory wants us to use only the garage entrance for all activities now.

Library: Laura presented a list of books and magazines to fill in gaps in the club library and said they would cost about $250. Board voted to approve that expense and an additional $250 for the year, to make up for the past few years' spending moratorium. Laura and Tom will cull out old books from the library and Mary will ask for book donations at the next general meeting.

Newsletter: Pat asked whether the board would prefer to drop the passwords used to access the monthly newsletter, and have it open to anyone. Board voted to do so; begins with May issue.

OLD BUSINESS
2008 Masters:
The board decided to ask Ted Matson for fall and Mike Hagedorn for spring 2008.

Best of the U.S. update:
Dale said he has one tree signed up for the Pacific Rim Collection's annual photo display, and will look for more candidates.

Como update:
Ken said the new bonsai room will be used this year for tree display, but they will be constantly rotated to the outdoors because of the poor lighting and ventilation in the room. A new indoor display area is planned for the old gift shop space, which will tie in with the new outdoor bonsai garden connecting to the Japanese garden. Como has hired a new architect and groundbreaking is expected in 1 to 1-1/2 years.

MABA 2010 convention:
Dale volunteered to chair the convention. He will contact the steering committee to make sure he has enough volunteers before we go ahead and put in a bid to host.

NEW BUSINESS

Board voted not to hold a formal board reception for Roy Nagatoshi.

For lack of time, the board postponed discussion of the State Fair show/display committee; a proposal to have door prizes at general meetings or special events like the holiday party; and setting dates for 2008 activities.

Mary asked Pat to print new members’ names in the newsletter.

Nametag labels with our logo - Cheryl said she will print some and bring them to meetings.

Meeting adjourned at 9 PM.

Respectfully submitted, Pat Leners, Secretary
