| MBS Board Meeting - April 24, 2007
The meeting was called to order at 7 PM. Present were: Mary Russell, Val Drinane, Lynn Aaze, Terry Bishop, Glenda Jungquist, Tim Mathwig, Ken Ellis, Bob Hampel, Dale Krueger, Larry Oreschnick, Pat Leners, Tom Durnick and Laura Flath. Absent: Cheryl Sykora. The March Board meeting minutes were read and approved. President’s Report: Mary read an email from the St. Paul-Nagasaki Sister City Committee asking us to participate in the May Sakura (cherry blossom) Festival, as we have in the past. Glenda will announce it at the May general meeting and have a signup sheet. Treasurer’s Report: Val had emailed the latest reports to board members; there were no questions. 1st VP/Programs: Bob said the May meeting will feature Roy Nagatoshi critiquing about a dozen trees; Bob asked each Board member to bring a tree. June meeting is the spring auction. 2nd VP/Workshops: Larry reported that novice workshop applications are still coming in. Glenda and Larry talked about the junipers and ficus material that will be on hand when needed. Club workshops with Roy Nagatoshi have satisfactory signups already. Pat was asked to change the observer’s fee in the newsletter to $15 per session; it mistakenly reads $10. Suthin workshops: Glenda says there is one opening for this year and next. Tools for novice workshops: Glenda painted handles bright pink on the new tools; there are plenty available now. COMMITTEE REPORTS Membership: Lynn says it appears to be helpful to many members to have a special table at general meetings; it also is working well for her to transfer info and funds to the proper committee chairmen and treasurer. Bonsai Basics Class: Mary reported for Cheryl that attendance is very strong now, about 20 participants at the April class, new members of varied ages, and enthusiasm is strong. Cheryl has everything very well organized. Master Coordinator: Mike Hagedorn has agreed to be our visiting master for spring 2008; Ted Matson will let us know about fall 2008 by the May board meeting. Arboretum Plant Fair: Tim said it went well, with 5 club members participating at the information table. As a demonstration, the arboretum’s trident maple forest was repotted and rebuilt with 5 more trees. Board discussed increasing our presence there by loaning several more bonsai and maybe building tables or stands for them. Bob and Tim will make inquiries about this and possibly having an annual club show there. Art in Bloom: Ken reported that 11 members would be showing one tree each at the April Art in Bloom show at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Discussed setup and takedown. Mother's Day Show: Glenda said members will prewire the major line for the novice workshop junipers as demos during the show. The display will be in the bonsai room, adjoining hallway, and education room. Larry said only 17 trees are signed up for the show; board judged that we had room for at least 30, so will announce it at the general meeting. Pat asked whether we need auction flyers and will make up several hundred copies for the show. NEW BUSINESS 2008 Calendar: The Board set the dates for next year. MBS Brochures: We will mention at the general meeting that brochures with stands are available for members to leave at their local nurseries. Door Prize Drawings: The Board voted not to give a special monthly door prize at general meetings. Picnic/Members Tour: Bob and Pam offered to host this summer's picnic if we could change the date to July 28; the board voted to accept. OLD BUSINESS Board reconsidered having a board dinner with Roy Nagatoshi. It will be on Saturday evening at a restaurant. State Fair display committee: Larry will bring a signup sheet to meetings; there are four people signed up so far. Best of the U.S. update: Dale said he is working on getting photos of several member trees for the Pacific Rim Collection's annual photo display. MABA 2010 convention: Dale said that, after speaking to other members, there was some interest in hosting a convention but no one to serve as chairman. Board decided to decline hosting for 2010, but possibly apply in a future year. Bob will be notified to contact MABA on the decision. Meeting adjourned at 8:50 PM. Respectfully submitted, Pat Leners, Secretary Back to Home Page |
