MINNESOTA BONSAI   Feb. 2007

Head for the Tropics!

Program chairman Bob Hampel announces: The February general meeting program will feature a video on the Shanghai Botanical Gardens, which includes a demonstration by Hu Yun Hua. The Shanghai Botanical Gardens is one of the
world's largest commercial suppliers of bonsai and penjing.

We start the year off with a new meeting format outlined by the Board: The business meeting and announcements will start at 7:00. The program will run from 7:30 until 8:30-8:45, and the raffle will conclude the formal meeting. Social time will follow. We ask that vendors and members be quiet and considerate during the presentation.

February is the meeting when we all emerge from January hibernation, probably spent digesting those holiday meals and scrounging for the last pieces of fancy chocolates. So come to greet your friends and compare weight gains.

We'll also pass around a petition to sign, asking the U.S. Postal Service to publish a set of bonsai-design stamps. The initial application was made last August by Ms. Eunice Corp of Michigan, passed the first screening, and is now under final consideration by a committee which includes Mrs. Walter (Joan) Mondale. Eighteen countries have already issued bonsai-design stamps, and we think the time is ripe for American Bonsai stamps.

From the travel guide Frommer's Shanghai:
SHANGHAI BOTANICAL GARDENS
" ... the city's premier and largest garden ... featuring peonies, roses, bamboo, azaleas, maples, osmanthus, magnolias, and orchids (considered the best in China) ... but the hallmark section is the Penjing Yuan (Bonsai Garden) ... with hundreds of bonsai displayed in a large complex of corridors, courtyards, pools, and rockeries."
